About Us

Hines Chapel is serving our Community with and by the love of God.

We are a community of believers rooted by faith in Christ Jesus and the love of God. We believe worship is not just found in prayer, it’s something expressed in everything we do. We hold the Word of God as truth from beginning to end and believe it is our duty to seek to correctly understand and teach it as it  is life’s only guidebook. We invite you to join us here at Hines Chapel to experience our fellowship and the grace of God for yourself.

Our services are available for you to attend in person or you may watch us online our Sunday morning Worship Service and our Wednesday Bible Study on our Facebook page or YouTube channel. Each service is recorded and posted on these two social medias for anyone to enjoy at anytime.

Hines Chapel Church welcomes all individuals seeking God’s love, and keep our doors open to every soul seeking to welcome Jesus into their hearts. We invite you to open your heart and allow His grace to penetrate into your soul.

The History of Hines Chapel:

During the year 1859, a group of  people gathered in the present Hines Chapel community in order to begin a new church. The exact organization date is not known, but a book, The Lives of Christian Ministry, by P. J. Kernoodle (1909), stated the Hines Chapel was admitted to the North Carolina and Virginia conference of the Christian Church at Union Ridge, Alamance County on October 6-10, 1859. The Reverend B.N. Hopkins was the founder, our organizer, and first minister.

The first church building was reported to be of logs with rough floors. Hines Chapel reported 10 members to the conference at the time of its admission in 1859. By 1874 membership increased to 67. A new building was begun and completed in 1875. It measured 40 feet wide and 65 to 70 feet long and was located across the road from the present building. Mr. E. D. Hines gave additional land to the church on which to construct this building . (It is obvious that the name of the church was in honor and appreciation for the interest and influence of the Hines Family in the church and community.

In 1914 a third house of worship was erected and was paid off by November 1915. More land was given by O. W. Hines, descendant of the first Hines donor of land, and construction was begun in 1955 on the present Educational Building, with 14 classrooms, study, library, kitchen, recreation room, and a large assembly room. the church people cleared the woods for the new building and also did most of the construction work.

The present sanctuary was completed in 1965 and consecration services were held November 28, 1968 at 3 pm. The first worship service was held in early November – a communion service. The sanctuary interior contains exposed beams, light oak pews, and a huge cross in a recessed “window” behind the altar.

Hines Chapel was a member of the Christian denomination and in 1977 voted to become an independent congregation. In 1976 Hines Chapel had its first Annual Missions Conference and continues an active outreach, from community to world involvement.

In seeking to obey Christ’s commands, especially those given in Matthew 28:19-20 and Acts 1:8, the church contributes to the support of many missionaries and mission agencies, with personal involvement on the local level.

In February 1992, Hines Chapel sent out the first missionaries from our local congregation, Brad and Kari Owens, who served in Austria. Starting in 1995 a work team was sent to Jamaica to help build a Christian village for the deaf. Then shortly after this, a work team was sent to Reynosa, Mexico to help with Children’s Haven International and the local work there.

Hines Chapel continues to send out mission teams locally and to other parts of the world, while supporting missionaries and mission agencies.

Our current pastor, Dr. Calvin Sacra, was voted on March 1, 2020 and serves the congregation at Hines Chapel.
